The 1,2,3 The 456

This month edition of Torchwood: The Official Magazine is a much improved effort after the last couple month's worth of reads. It offers another update on the filming of "Children of Earth", specifically revealling the rather vague name of a new alien race featured throughout it - the '456' (pronounced "Four-Five-Six"). Russell T Davies named the race publicly at last month's Cheltenham Literary Festival, which he attended with John Barrowman.
Question... the 456 - good guys, or ultimate evil?

TORCHWOOD MAGAZINE'S 11TH ISSUE - OUT NOW!

Meanwhile there's more casting details, as Nick Briggs (voice of many alien races - including the Daleks and Cybermen - in NuWho) makes his first appearence in front of the cameras, playing an unspecified role. Nicholas Farrell also appears as Brian Green (who "plays a pivotal role throughout all five episodes."), Katy Wix as Rhiannon, Rhodri Lewis as Johnny, Ian Gelder as Mr. Dekker, Charles Abomeli as Colonel Oduya and Hilary Maclean as Anna.

Other cast members announced include: Scott Bailey, Melanie Barker, Crisian Emanuel, Patrice Ettienne, Rachel Ferjani, Phylip Harries, Ashley Hunt, Christopher James and Anna Lawson.

During the last month, the Torchwood production team - and cast - have shot a number of scenes in central London. They've now returned to Cardiff for the dying days of production.

There's news on Chris Moyles tour of the Upper Boat sets - including Torchwood's Hub - that occurred on the 26th of September. Apparently video footage of the event can be found here. Rather you than me; I've never been the biggest fan of Moyles myself!

Elsewhere two stars of the "Children of Earth" adventure are interviewed on set of the latest serial - Eve Myles, and newcomer Liz May Brice (her of "Bad Girls" fame, who stars here as Johnson - a 'cynical government agent detirmined to expose Torchwood!'). There's an interview with Gareth Thomas - who played Ed Morgan in "Ghost Machine" - and a revealling article about that very same episode.

New fiction includes part eight of the "Rift War!" comic strip, and the first installment of a new fiction piece - "The Book of Jahi".

You can pick up the magazine (which gets two thumbs up from me) from news stands now, priced £3.99. Things are looking up for the publication, which is a joy to see.

11th Doctor - Matt Smith

The BBC has announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor...

Toy Time

Over on the Doctor Who Forum news has leaked regarding the second wave of Torchwood action figures, via a forum member who works for the Sci-Fi Collector company. According to a statement released by him/her:

I can confirm that we have today placed the Purchase Order, and paid the deposit for the next 4 characters, so there's no turning back! They will be Ianto, Captain John, Tosh and The Blowfish. May/June is not out of the question, but as we have seen before, complications can impede such optimism.

We are also progressing some Limited Editions, which it is realistic to suppose will be ready about the same time.

We propose to offer customers who pre-order, in the same way as we have done for wave 1, with a freepost opportunity, and the likelihood of early despatch, but the pre-ordering facility will not be announced for a little while yet.

We should be able to load images onto the site in the next few days. Ianto looks very fetching in his new pin stripes, and Tosh is now fully approved and looking great!

So, by the end of wave 2 the only member of the Torchwood team (aside from Suzie Costello) not to have a figure dedicated to them will be Owen Harper. Sci-Fi Collector goes on to discuss whether we'll eventually see this particular character figure...

Owen has been sculpted and remains very much on the cards, but we have one or two other ideas that we are exploring.

Hmmm... I wonder whether Owen will be released as a SDCC exclusive (like the much sort after Doctor Who Time Crash set)? If not, he should definitely be part of the third wave, which - based off personal preference - I'd also want to see feature Bilis Manger, a Sleeper agent and the aforementioned Suzie Costello.

The range's first wave features Captain Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper, a Weevil and Lisa/the Cyberwoman. They're set to a 5 inch scale (despite the Doctor Who range also being this, the Torchwood figures are ever so slightly taller than their Character Options' cousins). You should be able to pick up the figures on the high street via Forbidden Planet and Forbidden Planet International stores, or online at places like play.com.

Alternatively, you can order via Sci-Fi Collector themselves.

And on that note, thanks to Sci-Fi Collector (or at least this one representative) for taking the time to communicate with their customers in such an informal and personal manner. In this age of big business, that's a nice touch - and one that I'm sure a lot of Woodies appreciate.

New Doctor Who Collect and Build Figures

Character Options have recently revealed that they will be releasing a new wave of Doctor Who figures later this year. Each figure in the set will come with a different collectable part of a Gelth figure and the wave will consist of seven individually packaged figures. The wave will include figures of; The Doctor (aged 100 years), The Doctor (aged 900 years), Bannakafallata, a purple Clockwork man, Jabe, Astrid Peth, Captain Jack and The Master. Both aged figures of The Doctor will be packaged together as a double set and the Captain Jack in this wave will come with a new Doctor's hand accessory. In order to make the Gelth figure, you will need to collect all seven parts of it by buying each and every one of the figures in this wave. The figures are expected for release next month and more information about them can be found here. Will you be buying these figures when they are released?
